Ah, Venice; the city of canals, the city of gondolas and their gondoliers, the city of... Death? That couldn't be right. And yet the fading image I saw behind my closed lids now confirmed the existence of what I had never thought to be more than mere myth and legend...
'Inconceivable. Unimaginable.' I blankly thought as I slowly began regaining consciousness, but yet no control of my mangled body returned. The words didn't seem to even form in my mind. As though they weren't mine. As though someone else were murmuring them in my ear. What had happened to me? Everything was a daze, shrouded with confusion and sheer impossibility. There was no logical way that--
Then came the pain.
Suddenly, nothing else mattered. Not the crippling ache I felt in my back, legs or neck, not the terrifying reality of everything that I surely had not just witnessed and been a part of, not even the two lifeless and broken bodies of my new family that lay strewn beside me. Suddenly, all that mattered was the burning. That horrible, torturous burning... Thousands of times worse than sticking your hand on a white-hot piece of metal... Worse than standing inside a bonfire as the flames licked at your skin, charring everything it touched.
Was I on fire? Was that why I couldn't seem to locate my arms or legs; because they had been singed off? How was I still alive? No... This wasn't living. This was hell. I was on fire. I was burning alive and it would be the end of me. Slowly.
'Dear GOD, someone kill me!' I shouted repeatedly and desperately in my mind, hoping that by some slim chance, someone would be able to hear it and take pity. Of course there would be no such luck... As I lay there, paralyzed, on the cold stone streets of Venice, I was being burned alive; turning to ash from the inside out.
Emma Collison. If her name were to be a noun in the dictionary, next to her picture would be the definition "The origin of every small town's troubles," along with synonyms such as "monster", "blood sucker", "surveyor of the Food Network", and of course, "vampire". For years, the poor thing's been tearing apart cities in a desperate attempt to escape the one and only thing she fears most: Death. Hard to imagine that one burgundy-eyed girl could be the cause of so much chaos in such a short amount of time. Since a rather unpleasant trip to Venice, Italy, at least two new vampires have come into existence because of her, as well as several werewolves, and a pretty good sized stack of mutilated bodies.
Oh, but we can't blame everything on Emma, can we? Riddle me this: What do you get when you mix an innocent six year old with a werewolf in Transylvania? A vampire's mutant dog for a sister? Yes. Family discord? Yes. Battle of the species? Yes. Allow me to introduce Jadeus Eversen - Biological sister of Jacob Eversen, local 'Child of the Moon', drooling beast, and blond. Bitten by a werewolf at the young age of six, Jadeus has managed to keep her secret between her brother and herself since that star-crossed day all those years ago. But what happens when that brother turns against you, becoming the very polar opposite of yourself? Vampires and werewolves don't get along very well, I've heard, regardless of family ties.
And then there's the tracker, Demetri. No, he's not the member of the Volturi guard you may be thinking of. Sure, the two are from the same country, similar in stature, hair color, and abilities, but that's merely coincidental. Demetri (A) {our Demetri} has better things to do than sit around and protect three ol' decrepit nut-cakes {AKA Aro, Caius, and Marcus}. He's got places to go, people to hunt! It's not all about blood and power, you know. So when this tracker of ours fails to off an orphaned Emma, what other choice has he than to track her down and finish the job? But there's a problem... Damn, that girl can run!
After tracking Emma across the ocean to America, Demetri just can't seem to get ahead. Finally, she unknowingly leads him to Timberwood, Wyoming, her home town. How quaint! It seems Demetri'll be able to have his cake and eat it, too. Not only is Emma completely vulnerable and at a dead end, but absolutely no one would notice if every human in this little divot of the Teton mountains were to simply... Disappear. Just when he's about to do what's taken him quite long enough to accomplish, a relative of Emma's, Carson Burnette, swoops in to save the day. It would figure that the guy's a vampire! And then there's Jacob - that little nuisance, created by Emma for the sole and incredibly selfish purpose of protecting herself. Always drifting around her as though she were actually something to protect...
After a bit of a tussle with Jacob and Carson, a very disgruntled Demetri wanders up into the mountains to do some serious thinking. As luck would have it, Thayde, a werewolf in the same species as Jadeus, happens to be wandering around the outskirts of Timberwood doing some thinking himself: Unfortunately, it's fairly difficult to find another werewolf so much like yourself, let alone a female, anywhere in this crazy world. Much to Thayde's initial disbelief, and later, excitement, he comes across Jadeus. To him, she is quite literally one in a million. Yet once again, Jacob causes a problem: He won't let Thayde anywhere near his younger sister. And so, both murderous vampire and lovestruck werewolf have come to a common impasse; one hell of an annoyance of a vampire... Leave it to Demetri to take advantage of Thayde, the poor kid. To sum up Demetri's threat: "Jacob causes a problem for the both of us. Help me get rid of 'im or I'll kill you and your little girlfriend. Capiche?"
Ah, but there's more than just one catch here. Lilly Carter, a human at the local high school, seems to have caught the attention of a certain vampire friend of ours. Jacob's so overrun with old human emotions, he can barely think straight! He finds it difficult not to just kill her, but he manages... As Emma put it, "You can't outrun Death, but you can put up a fight." And for Lilly, getting in too deep with Jacob and his family could mean having to do exactly that.
