Light as day outside. Snow flakes falling down from the sky. A soft whimper of a dog was heard. A female dog barked as if commanding her little puppies to come back in her warm embrace under the bush. A young girl with short black hair, light creamy brown skin, and a black dress under a white cloak rounded around the house that stood in her way. Her dark brown eyes fixated upon the dog and its little puppies. "Aw you poor thing." The young girl said in a hushed whisper. When she saw the three little puppies the girl gasped in horror. "You must all be cold!" She exclaimed. Crouching down in front of the bush the girl turned slightly. "Tyler..Tyler help me bring this dog in! And the puppies too." She said aloud. Her friend Tyler came around the corner wearing a blue long coat which covered his pale skin. "Puppies? She had puppies? Nathjes that's amazing. I just hope my brother will let us keep them inside until the snow passes." He said while helping her bring the female dog inside. "I hope so too." Nathjes said in an excited tone. Finally when they set the dog onto the warm carpet in the living room Nathjes looked to Ryan, Tyler's brother. "Could we keep the dogs inside until the snow passes?" Nathjes asked. Ryan looked at the dog, and then nodded. "Sure, if you wish." He said with a sigh. Nathjes was surprised that Ryan would say yes. Tyler flashed her a grin. "I'll go grab the rest of the puppies." Nathjes said as she rushed out through the door. When she got outside back to the bush Nathjes saw that the puppies were laying pretty still under the bush. Maybe too still...this worried her. Nathjes touched their soft fluffy coats with her fingers yet they didn't budge. 'Dead...they're dead.' Nathjes thought sadly. She was going to leave them outside but...thought that maybe she could do something for the mother. Picking up the three puppies in her arms she went back inside and set them in front of the female dog. "They're dead. I'm sorry. " Nathjes murmured sadly. She seem to be musing over the puppies for a full minute though while the dog whined over her dead puppies. Suddenly she blurted out, "A life for a life." She said desperately. Nathjes hated to see the female dog suffer so she wanted to give her something that no one could or at least would do...The dog understood her and nodded. Then Tyler blurted out, "Are you crazy? Why are you so eager to die?!" He said in protest. Nathjes looked startled. Looking slightly ashamed she averted her eyes away from Tyler's. "This is what I do. This is my job. This is one of the ways I help people. Besides..I'm not so afraid of death anymore. " She said softly while rubbing the female dog's head. "But you'll die! Don't throw your life away over a bunch of dogs." He said. She merely chuckled, and smiled. "Tyler Tyler Tyler..there is much for you to learn." She said. "I don't find this funny!" He shouted. "Well I do..Besides..haven't anyone told you...? I don't actually die, I sleep." Nathjes looked down to the puppies and touched all of their heads with her pointer finger. You could see energy being transferred from her to the puppies. As her life force decreased she became weak...and fell to the floor. "No!" Tyler rushed to her pulling her up into his arms. Ryan had no regrets, he knew what would happen. He just wanted Tyler to learn the hard way so that he would see that Nathjes never truly died. "Why didn't you stop her?" Tyler asked through clenched teeth. He rocked back and forth with Nathjes in his arms. "A life for a life.." Ryan said as he watched the puppies come to life and greet their mother. Ryan left the room closing the door behind him. Tyler let out a scream as he began to cry over Nathjes' dead body.
